The pebble which stubs your toe could remind you of your desert journey every time you touch it on your mantel. You never know. Chris, like many other great artists, has created a magical otherworld which can give us what the “real” world can’t.
Whenever Chris performs the song “Clay Mountain” – whether with the band Smokehouse Bucket, or on his own with his album An Honest Measure – it moves me to the place in my heart where there is an everlasting Clay Mountain, tall and sturdy and there for the climbing.

The song “Clay Mountain” was inspired by two things in particular. The first was from another song called “Back to Culp” from 12-4-99 (Hakim/Peck), and the other was literally the shirt on my back that was dyed with the red clay from the natives in the Anza Borrego desert. Many of our greatest times together were shared in music, and in our many trips to “Our Place”, in Anza. Many of the things we said and laughed about were in our songs. I will never forget these times, as they are part of my soul. Walk in the shade, my brothers.
